Case 02 / Generative fabrication
The question
Can AI recover a useful, printable three-dimensional object from a photograph—even when the photograph shows only one side?
The answer is promising but conditional. A model can infer hidden geometry and generate plausible viewpoints; it cannot recover information the image never contained with certainty. The strongest workflow treats AI as a hypothesis generator, then applies geometric, material and manufacturing checks.
The proposed pipeline
Use diffuse light, a clean background and multiple views where possible. Preserve scale with one known measurement.
A novel-view model proposes consistent side and rear views. These are inferred possibilities, not recovered facts.
A single- or multi-view reconstruction model creates shape, surface and, where useful, texture.
Remove floating geometry, close holes, resolve self-intersections and create a watertight manifold.
Set real dimensions, wall thickness, tolerances, orientation and supports for the intended printer and material.
Preview every layer, print a small test and compare the result against function—not merely visual similarity.

Finding
“Perfect” is not a model output. It is the result of a traceable loop between evidence, inference and fabrication.
The compelling case is not automatic object copying. It is a faster design dialogue: AI proposes geometry, a human corrects meaning, and the printer exposes what both misunderstood.
